On June 27, 1947 an American pilot witnessed a group of strange objects in the sky. He described them as moving "like saucers skipping across the water." From this report an anonymous journalist  invented the term "flying saucer," later to be adapted by Captain Ed Ruppelt, the USAF intelligence officer responsible for such matters to the more familiar U.F.O.
